When Tooth Extraction Might Be Necessary

While we always try to save your natural teeth, sometimes an extraction is the best option for your oral and overall health. A natural, healthy mouth is a delicate ecosystem, and we only recommend an extraction when it’s in your best interest.

    • Here are some situations when we may advise an extraction:

      • Severe Damage: A tooth that is severely decayed or has a large piece broken off may be beyond repair. If a large filling or crown has broken or come loose, the tooth may be unrestorable.
      • Breakage Below the Gumline: If the crown of a tooth breaks off below the gum tissue or a fracture extends into the roots, the tooth usually can’t be saved and may require an emergency extraction.
      • Infection or Abscess: While we can often save a badly infected tooth with a root canal, sometimes the infection is too severe, and an extraction is the only way to resolve the problem and stop the pain.
      • Failed Root Canal Therapy: Although root canal treatment has a very high success rate, sometimes a re-infection can occur due to factors outside of our control. If this happens, an extraction may be necessary to remove the source of the issue.
      • Failed Re-implantation: In some cases, a tooth that has been knocked out can be placed back into the socket. While this can be successful, it doesn’t always work, and the tooth may eventually need to be removed.
      • Risk of Systemic Infection: For patients with compromised immune systems or those who have had an organ transplant, a problematic tooth can pose a serious risk of systemic infection. Removing the tooth might be the safest option to protect their overall health.
      • Orthodontics: If your teeth are too crowded, an orthodontist may recommend removing one or more (usually a premolar) to create enough space for the teeth to move into their correct positions.
      • Preparation for Dentures: If you have only a few natural teeth left and they aren’t healthy, you may choose to have them removed to prepare for a full set of dentures.
      • Extra Teeth: A small percentage of the population has extra, or supernumerary, teeth that can crowd or block other teeth from coming in. Removing them helps maintain the health and alignment of the rest of your smile.

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, don’t always need to be removed. However, we often recommend wisdom tooth extraction if they are impacted (stuck in the bone), causing crowding, or if they are prone to developing cysts and causing pain or headaches. Our team will always provide a personalized recommendation based on what’s best for your unique situation.

What to Expect When Getting a Tooth Pulled

We know a tooth extraction can feel intimidating, but our goal is to make it as calm and comfortable as possible. We begin with a full exam and consultation, reviewing your medical history and prescribing antibiotics if needed for your safety.

On the day of your procedure, we’ll numb the area with a local anesthetic so you won’t feel pain. For a tooth that has fully emerged, we gently loosen and remove it. For an impacted tooth, we may make a small incision or section the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal. If you’re feeling anxious, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available to help you relax.

After the tooth is out, we place gauze to help form a protective blood clot and provide you with simple aftercare instructions. Most patients experience only mild swelling or discomfort, which can be managed with ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. Stick to soft foods for a few days, and take any prescribed medications exactly as directed.

Our team is here to guide you through every step and ensure a smooth, stress-free recovery.
