What Are Dentures?

A denture is a dental prosthetic that holds artificial teeth to replace the ones you’re missing. Most dentures are removable, which makes them easy to clean and care for.

While we might say we are “making” your dentures, what we are really doing is designing a highly-personalized prosthetic. We take very precise impressions of your mouth and then send the design to a dental laboratory where skilled technicians carefully craft your denture to fit you perfectly.

Today’s dentures are made from a variety of modern materials, and we will help you choose the one that’s right for you. Here are the most common options:

  • Acrylic Dentures: Most dentures have a rigid acrylic base that is tinted pink to look just like your natural gum tissue. This base is shaped to fit comfortably over your bony ridge, and the teeth are made from natural-looking acrylic. These are a great, durable option.
  • Thermoplastic Dentures: Some dentures are made from a cast thermoplastic material. These are a popular choice because they are very thin, lightweight, and flexible, which makes them incredibly comfortable. However, they may not be as durable as acrylics.
  • Premium Dentures: For the most natural look, some dentures are made with a metal framework covered with acrylic. Each tooth is handcrafted from porcelain and placed individually into the arch. This type of denture is a bit heavier and may take some getting used to, but the result is a beautiful, very natural-looking, and sturdy smile.

No matter which option you choose, our goal is to design a denture that fits comfortably, looks great, and helps you feel confident again.

Types of Dentures

At Dominion Street Dental, we understand that everyone has unique needs, and we offer a variety of customized denture options to fit your lifestyle and budget. Our goal is to find the perfect solution to restore your smile.

  • Partial Dentures: A partial denture is the ideal solution if you’re only missing one or a few teeth. It can replace teeth in a row or in different spots throughout your arch. The denture is held securely in place by small, discreet clips that fasten to your existing, healthy teeth. It’s also removable, which makes cleaning a breeze.
  • Full Dentures: A full denture is designed to replace all the teeth in an arch. The lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to allow your tongue to move freely, while the upper denture typically covers the palate. Both are held in place by natural suction and your cheek muscles.
  • Complete Dentures: When you need to replace all your teeth, we can create a complete set of dentures for both your upper and lower arches. These work together to restore both the look and function of your smile.
  • Immediate Dentures: An immediate denture is a great option because it’s designed and created from impressions of your mouth before your teeth are removed. This means we can place the denture on the same day as your extractions, so you don’t have to go a single day without a complete smile. Please note that as your mouth heals and changes shape, the immediate denture may need to be relined or replaced later on.

The Problem of Instability & Our Solution

One of the most common complaints we hear about dentures is instability. A denture that wobbles, slips, or pops out can be uncomfortable and make it difficult to speak or chew with confidence. This instability can also rub against your gums, causing sore spots.

Sloppy denture fit can happen over time, not because the denture is wearing out, but because your facial structures are naturally changing. When you lose teeth, your jawbone no longer receives the stimulation it needs from the tooth roots, which can lead to bone loss. This changes the shape of your mouth and affects how your denture fits.

Implant-Retained Dentures: The Ultimate Solution

An implant-retained denture is the most secure and stable option available. Here’s how it works: dental implants act as a substitute for your natural tooth roots, providing essential stimulation to help maintain your bone density. A full denture can be firmly anchored with as few as four dental implants in an arch. An overdenture is placed over the healing implants so you never have to be without teeth during the healing process.

Once the implants are fully healed, we adjust your denture to securely clip onto the implant attachments, providing a dramatic increase in stability. These dentures can be either removable or permanently affixed, giving you the freedom to choose what’s best for you. With implant-supported dentures, you can eat, speak, and smile with renewed confidence and comfort.

The Denture Process

Getting a new smile with full dentures takes a little time, usually over a few appointments. But we can assure you that the time and effort you invest will be well worth it for a smile that looks and feels great. We’re here to guide you through every step.

For most dentures (not including immediate dentures), we begin by taking impressions of your gums once any extractions have healed. We’ll use a special technique called wax rims to make sure the fit between your upper and lower arches is just right. This is crucial for a comfortable bite, or occlusion. We’ll also work together to choose the perfect shape, size, and color for your new teeth. All of this information is then sent to a trusted dental lab to create your custom denture.

An exciting and important step is the “try-in” visit:

  • The lab sends us a wax model of your denture.
  • You’ll get to insert it and see how it feels and looks. This is your chance to see your new smile for the first time!
  • We’ll make any modifications that are needed to ensure you are completely satisfied with the fit and appearance.

Once you are thrilled with the try-in, the lab will create your final denture. You’ll return to our office for the final fitting and any last adjustments. We’ll also schedule a follow-up visit a few weeks later so we can make any further adjustments after you’ve had some time to get used to your new smile.

Dominion Street Dental and typically doesn’t require general anesthesia. The result of the procedure is thicker, wider bone that not only provides a stable foundation for your dentures but can also help restore a more natural look to your face, reducing that “sunken-in” appearance that can happen when you lose bone.

With this modern approach, most people in reasonably good health can become excellent candidates for implant-supported dentures. This means that a more secure, confident smile is likely within your reach.
